La Rochelle

28/8 - 2/9, 2024

Île d'Yeu - La Rochelle

  • Gentle sailing - nice weather
  • Straight ahead with engine assisted genakker all the way
  • 60 nautical miles in less than 10 hours
  • Arriving at La Rochelle marina, you dock at the welcoming pontoon and is guided to your berth by a dinghy
  • It is the largest marina in Europe and No. 2 in the world - 5000 boats (they need only another 500 berths to beat Miami as the biggest in the world)
  • We booked for 5 days as we knew the boat is supposed to depart from La Rochelle on 2nd of September - ON A LORRY!
  • YES, we have decided to transport Sakura across France from Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean on a lorry
  • So, we had to arrange de-masting and other preparations before loading

De-masting and other transport preparations...

It's a man :-)

Sakura, de-masted and stripped for radar

Peter had to disembark on Thursday to commit to obligations in DK but John stayed to assist with transport preparations. It has been an honour to enjoy the company of these two gentlemen for two weeks.

La Rochelle - worth a visit...

Cello concert in the marina - the boat name is 'Violincelle'...

Sakura leaving La Rochelle...

The transport was scheduled for 2/9 at 16:00 hours. However, the lorry didn't show up, due to an accident on the motorway.

The loading was re-arranged with kind assistance from the port crane office to the next morning (3/9) at 8:00. And this time everything was handled very professionally.
