Lauwersmeer

20/6-22/6 2024

Borkum-Lauwersoog

  • Even though weather was as forecasted with low winds, there was a nasty swell in the Noth Sea that day
  • When entering the so-called 'Seegat' between the island Schiermonikoog and the neighbouring islands, the swell met with the outgoing current, and turned into quite aggressive waves - we had to be fully concentrated during the passing
  • Alla did NOT like it but kept concentrating on the task and suppressed the discomfort very bravely
  • We passed the lock that is the entrance to the Lauwersmeer - protected inland waters - finally in Holland
  • Spent the next day in a very nice marina 'Jagthaven Noordergat' with the best facilities we have experienced until now

Maybe a little hard to see - but these waves were quite fierce and scary - and very close!!!

I thought a had recorded a video as well, but it seems that it failed, unfortunately.

Anyway, we definitely experienced that the North Sea is not for kids!

Very thankful that we have a highly seaworthy boat that made the pass - although a little too exiting, - safe and far from being dangerous.

We may now enter the 'Staande Mastroute' which is a safe inland passage for sailboats where you may keep you mast on (as the name expresses)

We intend to stay here and via Amsterdam go all the way down to the Belgian border, south of Rotterdam, where we may enter the English Channel.
